Alice is derived from a portrait commission of a young girl. By Anna’s own admission, this version of Alice’s head calls upon the later 19th century style of sculpture such as that practiced by Peidmontese Medardo Rosso. This style invoked the strength of currency to produce a form of Realism in sculpture further emphasized by attention to surface textures. Unlike the straightforward Classical style that often produces more idealized, pristine features, this rendering of Alice is touched with variability and spontaneity, creating vibrant surfaces one after which are not the same, resulting in a range of sentiment and feelings on the surface textures.
