Commissioned for a bank that embraced the bull as its corporate logo, this smaller version is the modello for the final large work. The challenge for Anna in this instance was to harness the energy of the masculine animal, but also to compel a gentler element and gracefulness from this magnificent bovine force. The result is a bull that is moving forward but also contemplating its movement, starting from the channel forward of the head and withers, bowed toward chest, to the push of the hindquarters and the alert, horizontal flag of the tail. The energy and spirit of the bull moves in line with its taut directional composition. At the same time, the litheness we know little of from such a large beast finds its vivid traceability in the conviction of the bull not as an animal, but as an intention and inspiration, a symbolic gesture carefully impressed onto its sensuous form and visionary line. |
