The typical contrapposto of Feeling recalls to mind classical sculpture where the weight bearing limb leans the body slightly backward and the advancing limb propels the body forward. The result is a powerful gesture that recreates life in a piece of sculptural definition, of two opposing forces bringing vibrancy toward the central position. Feeling conveys an emotive sensation (hence its title) and draws that sensation back toward the soft, equanimity that is the pink marble from Portugal. Anna’s elects to bring out the feminine quality in the work through her handling of the lines on the rich almost fleshlike marble. But its stability and erect quality cast Feeling into the historical archives of monumental muses and heroines from the bygone era. |
