Neither a female or male form, Pensiero was completed in both bronze and marble. The strength of the work is embodied in its androgynous and elementary rendering: clean, smooth lines of a human figure and face, whose expression does not betray sentiment or what is humanly possible. Yet here Pensiero stands, the typical bust from the shoulders up, face contemplating a thought unknown to us except through its process. To have achieved these features with the hand, is to touch lightly but surely, creating youth and august within the same frame; feminine and masculine in universal bones, a spirited presence we know of deep in our hearts without familiarity. What the torso such as La Froza has done with the partial form, Pensiero achieves with the head and face alone. To write the poetry and imagination of centuries in one stanza, distilled in one word: in one face – like many but only one; through time but eternally to be. |
