This figure is based on a real life ballerina. Impossibly stilled in a fifth position enpointe, this dancer encircles the ballerina’s arms into the torso, fingers soft, one arm allonge, outward, and the other close to her heart. Her head is tipped to one side, eyes down. The posture demonstrates a dancer who is offering herself (with one hand outward) while holding herself close (the hand on heart). The poetic gesture is fully carried through the entire figure. Her head and dress are indistinct, she stands like an otherworldly figure, our dream, her dream, and the sculptor’s dream all at once. |
