This Madonna occupies a special place in a church in Anna’s family estate. She stands, quiet in her earthly grief, reflecting on her ability to measure against human suffering the grace of a powerful father, God. The turmoil is clearly evident in this piece: not unlike many of Anna’s works where the emotional density is wrought through the surfaces of the piece, and conveyed so markedly in the cast bronze. There are examples in Italian art of the 14th and 15th centuries that Anna has been inspired from. Mostly work of the same topos: the grieving mother, birth, a life written in destiny, death and sacrifice. |
